Hey I'm having some trouble with linking on the Doctor Joe page. I've created a bulleted list of his known patients (like the lawyers and killers have a list of known victims) but when I do the one for Slider and use that crossref link thing, it doesn't come out right at all. To the point that I can't even use that crossref link thing for Slider which I list the episode “FindKaylaWeber” next to and I can't figure out why. Can you help me fix that problem???
As Guru said, some of the background syntax was a bit messed up, mostly because of the "#" in the episode name.
Taking the "#" out of the name got it working. It's not exactly perfect (as it's now missing the "#") but I don't think that can be resolved (even the episode page itself has a additional formatting to make the name work properly).
I was wondering, would it be OK with you, if I added new "section" at the start of every episode page titled "Why is this a Major Crime?".
I've noticed that it's quite often asked by Lt. Provenza at the start of the episodes and I think it would make a nice addition to the page to always know why a certain case was assigned to Major Crimes rather than some other division.
Would that be OK or would it be better in the "Trivia" section as usually the explanation is not going to be very long?
That sounds like a fun idea. Go for it. I'd play with it a little and see what works.
Do you watch Bosch? It's on Amazon Prime here in the U.S. and is set in L.A. The show is based on novels by Michael Connelly (forgive me if you know some of this.) There's a wiki for the character that includes episodes of the show, but not a wiki just for the show. I was considering either building show's section of the character one up, or starting a new one for the show. If I do, would you be interested in developing the articles about the LAPD, etc?
I'm going to start experimenting with some new infoboxes, most likely starting with the law enforcement characters infobox. I hope I know how to do some of the things I've envisioned, but we'll see how that goes.
I'm probably going to be naming it something like law enforcement character new, or something like that for the time being.
I think I have the first version ready for you to see, there are still things I'd like to change but they require the use of the Wiki CSS (I think). I experimented with the CSS for a bit, didn't get it to work how I wanted as I have limited experience with it. I'll try to learn a bit more of how it works.
The background color has a odd red hue that I tried to fix but can't seem to be able to. I'd also like to get a border around the entire box but I think both of these things are only fixable in the CSS which we would have to create from scratch. All font size control is also only in the CSS as far as I know.
At first is Lt. Provenza. That is the "standard" layout how I imagined it.
Then, up next is Russell Taylor, because of the amount of divisions he has been assigned to. This is sort of a test about how we could separate careers, even for Fritz.
Don't mind the Affiliation header on that, if this would be the style going forward then it would obviously be changed. But anyways, this style would allow us to separate the careers and assignments a little better, listing the organization first and then their rank and the assignments he/she held at that rank.
Last box is Fritz Howard with the same style as Taylor, just to give you more of an idea of what I meant.
Hi LeverageGuru! I was wondering if I could have your permission to edit the main page. Currently, everything you have above the leftcolumn template on the Main Page spreads over the top of both columns. Because of the placement of the advertisement in the right column, all of this is being pushed down leaving a large gap between the top of the page and the content. Now, I appreciate that this may not be visible to you if you are using some adblocking software, but for those visitors who are not, then it is noticeable.
Also, I noticed that you have no custom background. I could help in designing one for you, as well as providing an updated wordmark.
Hi Cav, another admin here checking in. LG might not have noticed your message, hopefully this bumps the thread up a bit.
For me personally, all the adverts I'm seeing are at the top of the page, I haven't noticed anything being pushed down as you said although the ads might be different for different users.
As for the background, that is something I think would be awesome and I've tried making one myself, I just don't really have the skills to make it presentable.
The wordmark was one of my small projects a while ago, turned out pretty decent but of course it could be better. The thread where LG and I discussed it can be found on her message wall, just to give some possible pointers as to how we came to the final design.
All that is said, I'd still wait for LG to acknowledge your message, I don't really think I'm in a position to agree to this stuff without her permission, but for me, everything you mentioned sounded good.
We finally got the episode summaries for the first two episodes and some promotional photos to go along with them, looks like christmas came early!
And for the second subject, the Major Crimes Universe's LAPD and its organization:
I watched the season premiere for Season 2 of The Closer the other day (the one where they find a dead detective in a warehouse) and it caught my eye when the camera was scanning the huge crowd of officers that there was an Assistant Chief in the crowd (and it wasn't Pope)!
Now, I understand that they are all just extras, but I think that it's entirely possible that there is an another Assistant Chief (besides Pope/Taylor/Mason) that is just never shown because it just doesn't matter storywise.
Considering these shows use a "modified" LAPD organization from 2005 (when The Closer first started) it's entirely possible that this "mystery" Assistant Chief is the Director of the Office of Support Services (now known as the Office of Administrative Services), and I was wondering if you would be okay with me putting a small mention of this on the LAPD and LAPD Ranks -pages. Nothing major because we literally know nothing about them, but just something small to indicate that Pope/Taylor/Mason is not the only Assistant Chief (current articles imply this heavily).
Sorry if this message is a bit unclear/badly worder, I might be a bit tired.
Am I to assume that the episode templates for links are ready to go, at least for Major Crimes?
As for the appearances list, the reason I had numbered it, was because I thought that would be a nice way to keep track how many episodes per season someone was featured in. Do you prefer just the bullet points? May I ask why?
There are some mistakes/broken links for some episodes, for instance crossref for MC219 (“Return to Sender Part 2”). The correct name would be just "Return to Sender Part 2".
I tried to fix this (and some others I can't remember right now) myself but can't seem to understand how to edit them. Can you possibly give a quick crash course?
Also, for some reason, now when I'm editing pages the wiki automatically puts quotation marks (usually ", sometimes "") behind the ep-templates when I enter the edit mode. Can you think of any reason why it does that?
I'll have to constantly remind myself to check the whole page after the smallest of edits because every ep template gets screwed up.
Also, the EP and CROSSREF templates when viewed on mobile devices have terrible formatting:
As you can see, ep templates create ridiculously large gaps.
And for the crossref template, it's just messed up even more.
Screengrabs are from PC with a mobile preview but my own phone gives the same results.
I checked the POI wikia and that hasn't have these same problems, not on PC preview or on my phone. Do you have any ideas why they work there but not here?
I want to get your opinion on how we list Fritz's (and possibly everyone elses) rank information.
Currently I have his rank as Special Agent and then Deputy Chief. When he was the Acting Assistant Chief, I had that info there as well, but as the position was only temporary I removed it after he returned to lead the SOB.
My question here is, do you feel like the Acting Assistant Chief should be included in the infobox to have Special Agent, Deputy Chief, Acting Assistant Chief, and then back to Deputy Chief, or is that just making things more complicated than they should be?
Oh, too complicated. Let's go with the two major positions, and keep it simple. What I wish we could do is split his box so there's a section for when he was in the FBI and one for the LAPD, but that's probably too complicated, too.
I want to try out using the new reference template this weekend, and rework his article slightly (format, not content). Which leads me to another question: what do you think about the quote in the box? To me, that's more about Brenda, and not really relevant to Fritz. I don't mind the idea of the box, just the choice of dialogue.
If you check the revision history for Fritz's page, the second March 5, 2017 revision I did seperated some aspects of his FBI and LAPD career, but that was also just for the time he was Act. Asst. Chief.
Would that be something that you'd want added to there permanently (with some modifications so it carries over to the rank info as well)?
As for the quote box, it's definitely more Brenda than Fritz, but I don't see a big problem with it, it still describes Fritz and Brenda's relationship to an extent.
